Freelance Quote Builder

Pick the job, set the word count, and get an itemised client quote priced against the Editorial Freelancers Association's published median bands. Rush fees and rights are your own terms, clearly separated from the cited benchmark. Print it, save it as a PDF, or send the whole quote as a link.

EFA median band for Copyediting: Fiction: 2.0 cents to 2.7 cents per word

Extra line items (rights, licensing, expenses; your terms, not EFA data)

Everything runs in your browser. Your draft stays in this browser's local storage and a share link carries the quote in the link itself; nothing is sent to a server.

Where the numbers come from

The rate band beside your quote is the median range reported by more than 1,100 members of the Editorial Freelancers Association for work performed during 2025, published as the EFA's 2026 rate chart. The default rate is the midpoint of that band; you can quote inside it, above it, or below it, and the quote always shows the cited band so both sides can see the benchmark. For the handful of tasks where the EFA publishes only an hourly figure, the per-word rate is estimated from that hourly band and the reported working pace, and the quote badges it as an estimate rather than passing it off as an EFA per-word rate.

Rush fees, rights and licensing lines are a different matter: no published standard exists, so the builder treats them as your own policy and labels them that way on the printed quote. A generic answer can tell a writer what copyediting costs on average; it cannot produce your itemised quote for this client, this word count and these terms. That is what this page is for.

Research your rate first with thefreelance writing rates calculator, which converts any rate between per-word, per-hour and per-project against the full EFA chart, and sanity-check the market with thewriter salary explorer, built on US government wage data. When the client says yes, theinvoice generatorturns the quote into a bill.
