Every kind of writer, and how to become one

"Writer" is not one job. It is a couple of dozen, and they ask for different work, pay in different ways, and reward different temperaments. Some pay a salary you can look up in government data; some pay by the hour or the project; some pay almost nothing until a book takes off. This is the map: every path grouped by the kind of writing it is, each one linking to a full roadmap with the real numbers behind it.

Fiction and creative writing

Making things up for a living, from a novel with your name on it to a poem, a children's book or a screenplay. The path is slower to pay but the work is yours.

Journalism and nonfiction

Writing true things accurately, on deadline or at depth: reporting the news, covering a sport or a place, documenting how something works, or winning funding for a cause.

Commercial and freelance writing

Writing that a business pays for, and the editing that keeps it clean. This is where the steadiest income is, and where most writers actually earn a living.

Salary medians shown above are the national annual median for the closest US Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation, from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release. Paths without a median either fall under a BLS occupation not carried on this site or, in the case of reporters, under a category the public BLS data API does not serve, so no figure is shown rather than an unsourced one. Freelance-rate figures on the individual path pages come from the Editorial Freelancers Association rate chart. Every number traces to its source.
