Character Name Generator

Name a character born in any decade from the 1880s to the 2020s. Every first name comes from real Social Security birth records and every surname from the 2010 US Census, so a 1920s grandmother gets a genuine 1920s name, not a 2020s one. Each result shows its actual rank for that decade.

Why era-accurate names matter

Readers notice when a character's name is wrong for their generation, even if they cannot say why. A detective born in the 1950s named Jayden breaks the spell; a 1950s Linda or Gary holds it. This generator works from the Social Security Administration's national baby name file, which records how often every name was given in every year since 1880. Pick the decade your character was born, not the decade your story is set: a 70-year-old in a 1995 novel needs a 1920s name.

The popularity filter changes the effect of a name. Very common names (the top 25 of a decade) read as ordinary and trustworthy, good for everymen and background characters. Distinctive names (ranks 76 to 150) were real and familiar but stand out on the page, which suits protagonists. Surnames come from the 2010 US Census list of the 1,000 most common American surnames, shown with how many people per 100,000 carry each one.

Where the data comes from

First names and their decade ranks come from the US Social Security Administration's public national baby names file (1880 to 2025). Surnames and their frequencies come from the US Census Bureau's 2010 surname tables. Both are public domain. Nothing here is invented: every rank shown is computed directly from those records. Once you have a name, the Character Adjective Canvas linked below helps you build the personality behind it.
