Flesch Reading Ease (Rudolf Flesch, 1948) scores text from roughly 0 to 100, higher meaning easier:
FRE = 206.835 - 1.015 × (words / sentences) - 84.6 × (syllables / words)
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (Kincaid, Fishburne, Rogers and Chissom, 1975, developed for the US Navy) converts the same two ratios into a US school grade:
FKGL = 0.39 × (words / sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables / words) - 15.59
Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the mean adult silent-reading rate for non-fiction from Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies in the Journal of Memory and Language. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for reading aloud, which is why an 1,800-word speech runs about twelve minutes.
Take this two-sentence passage: "The cat sat on the mat. It looked very happy there."
Most popular fiction sits around grade 5 to 7, quality journalism around 8 to 10. Syllables are counted with the standard vowel-group heuristic (documented in this page's source code), so scores can differ by a few tenths from other checkers; the sentence-length chart matters more than the second decimal.
