The Zettelkasten for Creators Kit

A plain-text note system that turns what you read and do into ideas you can find again.

Buy for $29

What it is

A starter vault, five templates and a short method guide for running a Zettelkasten in plain text files. You write ideas down as you go, turn the good ones into one-idea notes, link them, and find them again when you sit down to write. No app, no account, no subscription. If you can open a text file, you can run it.

What is in the download

  • METHOD.md: the five-move workflow in plain English: capture, atomic notes, linking, maps of content and retrieval.
  • SETUP.md: a setup guide that assumes no terminal experience, with optional free backups using git.
  • starter-vault/: a ready-to-use notes folder with its own README on the folder layout and naming convention.
  • starter-vault/templates/: five templates: Permanent Note, Literature Note, Map of Content, Project Index and Active Projects.
  • starter-vault/notes/: four finished example notes and a filled-in project index, so you see the format before you write.
  • scripts/: three optional helpers that find duplicate lines, tag untagged notes and rename timestamped files into findable ones.
  • README.md and LICENSE.

# The Method

This is the thinking system. Not an app, not a productivity hack: a way of
turning the things you notice into ideas you can find and build on later. It has
five moves. You will not do all five every day. Most days you do the first one.
The rest happen when they happen.

The whole thing runs on plain text files and one habit: **write it down where
you can find it again.**

## The shape of it

```
   capture  ->  atomic notes  ->  linking  ->  maps of content  ->  retrieval
  (messy in)   (one idea each)   (connect)    (index by topic)    (find it later)
                                                                        |
                                                                        v
                                                        hand off to your output layer
```

Everything flows one way, from messy to structured, but you never do it all at
once. You capture constantly. You refine occasionally. You retrieve when you need

A finished note from the starter vault starter-vault/notes/Permanent-Note-a-recipe-intro-must-earn-the-scroll.md
# A recipe intro must earn the scroll, not delay it

Readers do not scroll past a recipe intro because intros are bad. They scroll
because most intros are a toll booth: a paragraph of childhood-in-Tuscany
throat-clearing standing between them and the ingredient list. The fix is not to
delete the intro. It is to make the intro pay its own way by answering one
question in the first two lines: why should I cook this tonight instead of the
version I already know? Everything after that is optional colour.

**Why it matters:** This is the difference between an intro that grows the
newsletter and one that trains readers to skim. If the first two lines deliver a
concrete reason (faster, cheaper, one pan, better crumb), the reader trusts the
rest and reads on. It also makes intros faster to write, because I stop reaching
for a story I do not have.

**Where it came from:** The 06-27 note where I drafted ten intros and kept two.
The two keepers both led with the payoff. The eight rejects all led with me.

**Connects to:**
- [[Permanent-Note-brown-butter-is-a-flavour-multiplier.md]]: a good "why cook this tonight" hook in one technique
- [[Literature-Note-salt-fat-acid-heat.md]]: the "teach the principle, not just the recipe" idea

How I use it

I keep thousands of notes in my own Zettelkasten. Some are a sentence long. Others run to hundreds of words. I add to it most mornings: ideas from books, courses and videos, and odd things that happened the day before.

To anyone else it looks like a mess of disconnected ideas. But when I review it, I see how one note connects to two others, and those connected notes turn into a newsletter, an article, a YouTube video or a book chapter. This system helped me write my last book in half the usual time.

It is a folder of Markdown files on my computer. I have switched apps more than once over the years and the notes never cared. Nothing is locked inside a company that can raise its prices or shut down.

This kit is the thinking half of that process: capture, connect, find. It stops at retrieval on purpose. You still write the draft, but you start it with notes you already have instead of a blank page.

Who it is for

Writers and creators who take good notes and then lose them. If you have ever thought "I know I read something about this" and come up empty, this is the fix. You do not need to be technical.

Before you buy

Is this a course?
No. It is a download of plain text files: a method guide, a setup guide, templates, worked examples and three scripts. There are no videos to watch.
Which app do I need?
None. Every file is plain Markdown text, so TextEdit, Notepad or any editor you already use will open it. SETUP.md suggests a free editor if you want one, but you never need it.
I am not technical. Will I cope?
Yes. If you can open a text file, you can run the system. The terminal is only for the optional scripts and the optional git backup, and SETUP.md walks you through both step by step.
Isn't the Zettelkasten method complicated?
The German word puts people off, and the rules you find online get confusing. The kit boils it down to five moves. Most days you only do the first one: write the idea down where you can find it again.
Will it write my articles for me?
No. It gets you to the point where you sit down to write with connected notes in front of you. Turning them into a draft is still your job.

Who should not buy it

If you want a shortcut or quick results, skip it. A Zettelkasten pays off only if you capture a little most days for weeks before you expect anything back. And if your current notes already feed finished work, keep them.

Delivery. You get a download link by email within a minute of purchase. The link works for 72 hours, and if it expires you can reply to the email for a fresh one. The download is a zip file (zk-creators-kit-v1.0.zip).

Refunds. If it is not what you needed, reply to your receipt email and you will get a refund. No questions asked.
