They are closed and have no spaces between the words they consist of (i.e., barefoot). Closed compound words can function as nouns, verbs, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, and conjunctions.

Open Compound Words
Open compound words have spaces between the words they consist of. Even so, they’re considered a single word (i.e., hot dog).
In most cases, open compound words are nouns. When it comes to verbs, they’re written as open compound words when combined with an adverb or a preposition (phrasal verb).
