Are you considering a new hosting provider? Or do you want to start a new blog or website with WordPress?
If so, you’re in the right place.
But before I get into this Siteground review, let me explain…
This post contains some affiliate links meaning I earn a small commission if you sign up. I only ever recommend products and services I’ve tested.
Who is SiteGround?
Siteground headquarters are in Sofia Bulgaria. They’ve been in business since 2004.
Today, Siteground is one of the more popular web hosting companies, particularly for bloggers and small businesses. It employs over 400 employees and hosts more than half a million domains around the world.
That’s a lot of domains!
Siteground also provides cloud and shared hosting as well as dedicated servers.
Who is Siteground For?
Siteground is an affordable web hosting provider. It specialises in speed and managed WordPress hosting.
This hosting provider is also ideal if you’re setting up a new business online and want a reliable website that provides the option where you can to speak to a real person about your technical issues.
Shared web hosting is a type of hosting whereby your website sites alongside other websites on a server. In some cases, this can cause issues like a slow-load time, which is bad if you want to rank in Google.
Shared web hosting also isn’t ideal for larger businesses or for those in need advanced control over their servers.
That said, shared web hosting is the best way to start a blog on your website because the web hosting provider will manage the server for you at an affordable price.
Siteground offers three types of shared web hosting plans. They also offer cloud hosting and enterprise hosting which is beyond the needs of most small business owners and bloggers.
For this 2020 Siteground review, I focused on their managed WordPress web hosting plans.
Each of these plans offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can take a one-month trial before you decide to buy too. Their plans include an automatic renewal.
You can pay monthly or yearly for any of these plans. You can also sign up for two or three-year contracts and get a discount.
As Siteground is based in Bulgaria, you can pay for their web hosting plans in dollars, pounds, euros or even Australian dollars.
When you purchase a plan, you can install WordPress in just one click. Or you can ask Siteground to migrate your website from a previous hosting provider.
I opted for the latter, and the migration proceeded without issue.
Their start-up plan costs just €3.95 excluding VAT for the first month. Then, you pay €9.95 per month excluding VAT.
If you have a domain, they will transfer it for you for free. If you don’t have a domain name, you can register one with Siteground for €13.95 per year.
You can also purchase an additional security tool called SG Site scanner for €18.60 per year, excluding VAT.
For that, you get unlimited email accounts, free daily website backups and a website builder. You get daily backups rather than the instant backups offered as part of their more expensive plans.
You can attract up to 10,000 unique visitors per month without paying more, which is more than enough for many new bloggers or website owners.
You also get 10 GB of storage, which is more than enough unless you plan toon hosting a lot of videos or photos. Siteground also provides 30 copies or backups of your website.
This plan is ideal if you have a single website or blog or you want to start one.
At the time, I didn’t know much about WordPress and I valued being able to use their live chat and ask questions about plugins and the speed of my site.
The GrowBig plan costs €6.45 active excluding VAT for the first month. Then, you pay €17.95 per month excluding VAT.
You get access to 20 GB of space which is enough for larger websites and blogs. You can also attract up to 25,000 visitors per month which should cover most website users. It also comes with free backups and restores.
I originally used this plan for this website.
The GrowBig is plan is ideal if you have more than one website or you have an established website that attracts more than 10,000 unique visitors per month. It’s also ideal if you don’t want to share your server with many other users, i.e., speed is of paramount importance to you.
You might, for example, have a blog, and a personal website. Or perhaps you want to manage two different e-commerce stores from one hosting provider.
The Siteground GoGeek plan costs €11.95 per month excluding VAT. Upon renewal, this costs €29.95 per month excluding VAT.
This Siteground plan is ideal if your site is large. You get up to 30GB of web storage plus you can attract up to 100,000 unique website visitors per month. This plan is also ideal if you’re looking for additional security features like PCI compliance (a payment card standard), which is useful for e-commerce stores.
As part of this plan, you also get access to a staging environment for WordPress and Joomla! (another popular content management system).
The staging environment is useful if you want to build a new website without publishing it. You may, for example, want to test a new design for your current site without alarming website visitors or readers.
They also offer instant backups, on-demand.
You can host an unlimited number of websites with the caveat that you’re limited by web store and your monthly visitor cap.
Additional Web Hosting Features
Siteground uses the latest technologies like SSD drives and a content distribution network, meaning your site can handle increases in traffic without issue.
They also offer a free SSL certificate and managed email.
You can install WordPress or Joomla! in just one click, and Siteground will automatically update your site for you too.
This web hosting provider enables you to pick where you want to host your website: United States, Europe United Kingdom and Asia-Pacific. You can make a decision depending on where you and your website are based.
Siteground also claims to have a 99.9% uptime which is above the industry-standard. While a customer, I’ve never had any problems with my site being down.
Siteground’s support is first-class and they go to great lengths to explain or fix technical issues to non-technical users.
Over the years, I’ve faced issues like WordPress plug-ins breaking my site, and I’ve also wanted to restore an earlier version of my site.
More recently while writing this Siteground review, I investigated how good support is.
I was able to raise a ticket and get a response in less than five minutes. I used the live chat and ticket system, but you can also ring them up and speak to a technical support rep.
Why I Use Siteground
If you’re wondering why I switched my hosting to Siteground, my previous provider took at least 24-hours to respond to my support tickets. Their replies were often short and technical i.e. I had to Google what they meant.
I’ve used Siteground to host a WordPress blog that attracted up to 10,000 and then 25,000 unique visitors per month.
Today, I use it to host this website because the plans are affordable and I value their technical support. Their web hosting is fast compared to other providers.
I also like that they automatically backup my site and scan it once each week for malicious activity.
Blogging with Siteground
Many bloggers struggle with technical challenges like what to do when their WordPress installation inevitably breaks.
They also sometimes opt for the cheapest hosting provider and then wonder why they don’t have access to things like quality technical support and backups.
WordPress is the premier platform for blogging online and this hosting provider specialises in WordPress installations as evidenced by their one-click install. If you start a blog with Siteground, they will update your plug-ins automatically.
It’s also reassuring to be able to open a live chat window and ask questions to a knowledgeable expert.
Another benefit is when you take out a plan and purchase your domain name, you can have your WordPress blog up and running within minutes.
Is SiteGround Worth It?
Siteground is worth it if you want to balance having and affordable website with speed and great support.
My main quibble with them is their pricing is somewhat confusing, but otherwise they are ideal for authors who want a website and new bloggers.
