I recently wrote a guest blog post for Tweak Your Biz about 30 proven ways you can promote your blog or website.
In that article, I cited guest blogging as a great way of promoting your website.
I’ve written guest blog posts for several different websites including Explore B2B and Bachelor.ie, and it’s a useful strategy for any online writer who wants to light up the internet with their content.
With this in mind, here are five guest blogging benefits:
1. It Gets You Out of Your Comfort Zone
Writing for a personal blog gets you into the habit of writing everyday, which is a useful skill for any blogger. However, like any habit, there’s a danger of getting stuck in a writing rut and addressing the same topics the same way repeatedly.
And this is boring to write and to read.
I’ve found that writing a guest blog post forces me to think of the guest blog owner’s style and their audience. Sometimes, this means I have to rework my blog posts or address my topic of choice in a way that will appeal to the guest blog owner’s audience.
If guest blogging gets you out of your creative comfort zone, your writing will improve.
2. Traffic To Your Website Will Increase
It takes time and a lot of work to build up organic and repeat traffic to a website and develop an online following. Guest blogging circumvents some of this effort because it allows you to tap into the guest blog’s audience and draw some of their traffic to your website.
The best way to do this is to include a link to your website at the bottom of your guest blog post or in your biography. It’s not a good idea to do this in the post itself as this can come across as overly promotional.
3. Guest Blogging Inspires Creative Thinking
When I guest blog, I spend time reading the owner’s blog posts and reader comments. And I spend time considering what I can write that will be of value to the guest blog owner and his or her readers.
This inspires ideas for posts that I would like to write, and it makes me think more creatively about the blog topics I’m working on.
4. Your Writing Finds a New Audience
When you write a guest blog post you get the chance to express your ideas and communicate to a new audience.
If you’re passionate about blogging and writing, this exposure to a new audience is worth the time it takes to write a guest blog post.
For most online writers, there’s little point in spending hours creating something if only a handful of people see it. Even if you receive negative feedback, you have a great opportunity to improve your blogging style.
5. Guest Blogging is More Powerful Than Social Media
Lots of bloggers spend hours building their social media presence and curating content for their social media followers.
I’ve written more than my fair share of social media guides, and sometimes social media can feel like a lot of work.
If you publish a guest blog post and your profile links to your Twitter handle or Google+ profile, you will attract new followers.
This kind of natural growth is less effort than spending time directly on social media, and it gives you more time to write.
The next time a guest blogging opportunity comes your way, don’t think of it as writing for free, instead consider these five guest blogging benefits. And if you’re unsure about what to write, my six ways of creating digital content could help you.
